Kōji Sekimizu ( Japanese 関 水 康 司 , Sekimizu Kōji ; born December 3, 1952 in Yokohama ) is a Japanese UN functionary. From 2012 to 2015 he was Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization .

Education and professional career

Sekimizu received his school education in Yokohama. He studied engineering at the University of Osaka and graduated in 1975. He completed the subsequent master’s degree two years later with a thesis on vibration analysis . In April 1977 he entered the public service and was assigned to the Ministry of Transportation to inspect ships in Nagasaki . In 1979 he moved to the Ministry of Transport, where he was responsible for the national implementation of the guidelines of the International Maritime Organization. From July 1980, Sekimizu took part in meetings of the International Maritime Organization as a member of the Japan Ship Technology Research Association . In April 1982 he was promoted to deputy head of the Department of Environmental Protection at the Ministry of Transport. In 1984 he was temporarily transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , where he dealt with matters relating to the OECD . After returning to the Ministry of Transportation, Sekimizu worked as the deputy head of the safety standards department. In July 1989 he joined the International Maritime Organization and initially worked in the Department of Technology and Safety at Sea. In 1992 he became head of this department. From October 1997 he was Deputy Head of the Department of Marine Environment and from August 2000 its Director. In early 2004 he returned to the Maritime Safety Department as Director. There he was involved in the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code and the development of the long range identification and tracking . On December 1, 2011, Sekimizu was appointed the seventh director of the International Maritime Organization and took office on January 1, 2012.

Others

Sekimizu is married, has two children and a grandfather of two. In his spare time he composes songs. He is a member of the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers . In 2012, he followed Efthimios Mitropoulos as Chancellor of the World Maritime University , an office he held until 2015.
