Ursula Koschinsky

Ursula Koschinsky (born November 24, 1923 in Königsberg (East Prussia) , † September 26, 2016 in Schwenningen ) was a German artist and glass painter .

Youth and education

She attended the Königin-Luise-Schule in Königsberg, passed the Abitur in 1942 and was then committed to the Reich Labor Service at Lyck and employed in the hospital service. In February 1945 she and her family fled from the approaching Red Army, first in a mine clearing boat from Pillau across the Danzig Bay to Gotenhafen , and then on a passenger ship across the southern Baltic Sea to Saßnitz . After the occupation of Rügen in May 1945 by the Soviet headquartersat the end of the year they left for the British zone of occupation in Flensburg . In 1946 the family moved to Randegg im Hegau . She began studying art at the State Art School in Hamburg in 1946 and, during her training, concentrated on glass art and wall painting , which were taught by Professor Theo Ortner. In order to deepen her practical skills and knowledge of glass painting, she worked in the summer holidays of 1947 and 1948 of her student days in the Albert Heberle glass workshop in Überlingen on Lake Constance. As a thesis in May 1951, she created a new glazing design for the large west window in the westwork of Cologne Cathedral . The work of the young student was then shortlisted.

Working as an artist

After completing her studies, she mainly took on church commissions as a freelance artist. Her masterpieces of sacred art are the large-format wall painting of the Way of the Cross in the chapel of the Maximilian-Kaller-Heim in Balve-Helle and the 24 square meter window wall of the Ermlandhaus in Münster . Other important works of art are: the mosaic wall with seven scenes of St. Dorothea von Montau in Königstein , the 14 Stations of the Cross in Bad Sooden-Allendorf and the tabernacle with mosaic stones made from pieces of glass and amber from the Baltic Sea coast in the St. Andrew's Chapel in the Ermlandhaus in Münster.

From 1971–1972 she worked as a nurse in Schaffhausen , Switzerland, and from 1972 until her retirement in 1988 she taught art at the St. Ursula School in Geisenheim . In 1989 she moved to Schwenningen in the Black Forest to look after her sick brother Georg .
