The Historical Association for Warmia (HVE) is a historical society devoted to research into the history of Warmia (Latin and Polish: Warmia ).

history

The association was founded on October 29, 1856 in Frauenburg , the seat of the Bishop of Warmia . The suggestion for this was provided by Wilhelm Junkmann , among others . The professors of the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg Anton Eichhorn , Joseph Bender and Andreas Thiel , as well as the archivist of the diocese archives, Martin Saage, and cathedral vicar Carl Peter Wölky were involved in the establishment. In 1857 Wölky and Saage began to work on the Warmia Document Book ( Codex diplomaticus Warmiensis ). In 1858 the first issue of the magazine for the history and archeology of Warmia appeared .

In 1902 the association began to hold study days and teaching evenings in Warmian cities ( Wormditt , Guttstadt , Allenstein , Heilsberg and Braunsberg) and in the 1920s also courses in local history as teacher training . On May 24, 1943, the association organized the celebrations in the Frauenburg Cathedral on the 400th anniversary of the death of Nicolaus Copernicus .

After the flight and expulsion from Warmia, the Warmia Council, chaired by Vicar Capitular Arthur Kather, decided to re-establish the association. Since 1955 the association has been based in Münster , the sponsor town of Braunsberg.

Hans Schmauch was chairman of the association for many years . In 1989, Hans-Jürgen Karp , succeeding Brigitte Poschmann (1932–2008), took over the chairmanship. The historian Hans-Jürgen Bömelburg has been chairman of the HVE since autumn 2009 .

Library

Until the end of 2008, the association's library was housed in the Ermlandhaus of the Katharinese Sisters in Münster. In 2009 it was transferred to the Martin Opitz Library in Herne , where it is kept as a separate collection .
