Brigitte Poschmann

Brigitte Poschmann (born March 18, 1932 in Waltersmühl , Heilsberg district , Warmia ; † February 12, 2008 in Minden ) was a German archivist and historian. From 1968 to 1992 she was in charge of the Bückeburg State Archives .

Life

Brigitte Poschmann came from a family of landowners in Warmia and left her home with her parents at the end of 1945 in the course of the flight and expulsion of Germans from Central and Eastern Europe . She studied history, German studies and philosophy at the University of Münster and the Philipps University of Marburg from 1952 to 1957 and was awarded a doctorate ( Dr. phil. ) In 1960 with a doctoral thesis for the dioceses and German orders in Prussia (1243–1525) . After completing a course at the Marburg archive school , she joined the archives service in Lower Saxony in 1961 (as the first woman) . She worked in the state archives in Osnabrück , Aurich and Wolfenbüttel . When she was appointed director of the Lower Saxony State Archives in Bückeburg in 1968, she was the first woman in Europe in a corresponding position.

As head of the State Archives, she was also responsible for managing the central workshop of the Lower Saxony State Archives and the expansion into a mass restoration workshop for the purpose of preserving modern paper. Since 1968 she was a member of the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen . From 1968 to 1992 she was chairman of the historical working group for Schaumburg and published the Schaumburg studies . Her scientific interests were also shaped by her East Prussian origins. From 1971 to 1989 she was chairwoman of the Historical Association for Warmia . In 1979 she was awarded the Order of Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice in recognition of her achievements and merits .
