Joseph Bender

Joseph Bender (born July 31, 1815 in Meschede in Westphalia , † December 8, 1893 in Braunsberg in East Prussia ) was a German university professor and historian.

Life

Bender had attended the Theodorianum high school in Paderborn and then studied history and philology for four and a half years at the University of Bonn . In 1840 he received his doctorate with a philological and philosophical dissertation and passed the senior teacher examination. As a grammar school teacher, he first worked at the grammar school Laurentianum Arnsberg and Paderborn, then in Konitz in West Prussia and from October 1848 then at the grammar school in Braunsberg in East Prussia . After seventeen years of teaching, he finally moved from grammar school to the Lyceum Hosianum in Braunsberg in the fall of 1863 . There he was appointed full professor of history as the successor to Johann Matthias Watterich (1826–1904). He published numerous articles on the history of Prussia , in particular on the history of Warmia .
