Kitack Lim (* before 1977 in Masan , Gyeongsangnam-do Province ) is a South Korean UN official and has been Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization since January 1, 2016 .

Life

Lim received his education at the Korea Maritime and Ocean University in Busan . There he graduated in nautical science in 1977 . He then worked as an officer on ships in the merchant navy in his home country. He later switched to the shipping industry and worked for Sanko Shipping . From 1985 he was employed by the Korean State Shipping and Port Authority. From 1986 he was a member of the delegation from his home country to the International Maritime Organization. There he was mainly concerned with questions of maritime security and maritime environmental protection. At the same time he continued his education and obtained a master’s degree from Yonsei University in Seoul in 1990 . He then moved to the World Maritime University in Malmö, where he obtained a master's degree in maritime administration with a focus on nautical science. From 1995 he completed his doctoral thesis at his alma mater . There he received his doctorate in 1998 . Between 2002 and 2004, he chaired the sub-committee for the implementation of flag state control within the International Maritime Organization. In 2004 he then headed the Tokyo Convention on Port State Control . Two years later he was appointed Naval Attaché and Counselor at the Embassy of the Republic of South Korea in London . Until August 2009, he was also deputy permanent representative of his home country at the International Maritime Organization. Then he took over the management of the maritime safety office in the Ministry of Land, Transportation and Shipping Affairs in Seoul. He held this post until 2011 before moving to the Korean Maritime Safety Tribunal as High Commissioner . In July 2012, he joined the Busan Port Authority as President . At the end of 2015, the General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization unanimously appointed him Secretary General with effect from January 1, 2016.
