William O'Neil

William Andrew O'Neil Esq. , CMG , CM (*  1927 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian UN functionary and was Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization from 1990 to 2004 .

Life

O'Neil graduated from the University of Toronto with an engineering degree in 1949 and entered the civil service. Initially, he held various positions within the Canadian Department of Transportation . Among other things, he was involved in the planning of the St. Lawrence Seaway . In 1955 he moved to the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority , where he was employed until 1971 and was significantly involved in the construction of the seaway. Among other things, he was responsible for the construction of the Welland Canal and its bypass canal. In 1971 he returned to the Department of Transportation and initially worked for the Canadian Marine Transportation Administration before he was appointed head of the Canadian Coast Guard in 1975 . On July 4, 1980, O'Neil took over the management of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority, an office that he held until 1990. At the same time he was chairman of the Seaway International Bridge Corporation responsible for the administration of Seaway International Bridge and a member of the board of directors of the Thousand Islands Bridge . In 1990 O'Neil was elected as the successor to Chandrika Prasad Srivastava as Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization. From 1991 he was a member of the International Maritime Bureau and the Board of Directors of the International Maritime Institute . He was also Chancellor of the World Maritime University from 1991 to 2004 . After two re-elections as General Secretary, O'Neil retired in 2003. In this office he was succeeded by the Greek Efthimios Mitropoulos . After his retirement, O'Neil initially took over the leadership of the International Council of the International Chamber of Shipping . Today O'Neil serves on the boards of several companies in the maritime industry .

In addition to these awards, O'Neil has received honorary doctorates from several universities, including City University London , the University of Malta and Nottingham Trent University . He is also a member of the Royal Society of Arts , the Royal Academy of Engineering and the American Society of Civil Engineers and numerous other societies. He is also an honorary member of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights .
