Bissandougou is a place in the prefecture of Kankan in the east of the West African Guinea , on the national road No. 1, about 50 km south of Kankan. Bissandougou was the capital of the kingdom of Samory Touré . It was here that the "Treaty of Bissandougou" was signed on March 25th, 1887, with which the French were granted extensive navigation rights on the Niger and which was the basis for the subsequent conquest of large parts of West Africa. In 1891 the city was captured and destroyed by the French colonial troops. Remains of the fortifications are outside the present-day location.
