The Bjarnarflag power plant ( isl. Bjarnarflagsstöð = Bjarnar flag station ) is a geothermal power plant in northern Iceland in the Mývatn area near the small town of Reykjahlíð . It is named after the Bjarnarflag area between Reykjahlíð and Námaskarð .
history
Similar to the larger Krafla power plant, it uses the energy from the central volcano Krafla .
The planning for this power plant began in 1967 and it was put into operation on March 5, 1969. There were already boreholes in the area to use geothermal energy for the diatomite near Reykjahlíð .
With an installed capacity of 3.2 MW, it is the oldest and smallest geothermal power plant of the operator Landsvirkjun , who took over Bjarnarflag from Laxá Power Company in 1983 and also maintains the Krafla power plant with an output of 60 MW about 7 km to the northeast. The total production of electrical energy by the Bjarnarflag power plant is around 18 GWh / a. It also supplies steam for the local district heating system as well as for industrial use.

The power plant was also affected by the series of eruptions in the Krafla system between 1975 and 1984.
