Black Fish
Blackfish (Shawnee: Chiungalla , Cot-ta-wa-ma-go or Mkah-day-way-may-qua ), (* 1729, † 1779 ) one was chief of the Shawnee and fierce opponent of the Euro-American colonists . He fought on the British side during the War of Independence . Little is known about his life as there are only written records of the last three years of his life.
In the spring of 1777 he tried to drive the settlers out of Kentucky and raided, among other things. a. Harrodsburg and Boonesborough . In February 1778 he wanted to attack Boonesborough, in the meantime he captured the later famous ranger Daniel Boone , whom he adopted a little later. In June 1778, Boone managed to escape captivity and warn the Boonesborough settlement he had founded of an impending attack by the Shawnee. Black Fish eventually had to withdraw from Boonesborough without success.
When the colonists, led by Colonel John Bowman, counterattacked, Black Fish was hit by a bullet in the thigh in the spring of 1779 while defending his village of Little Chillicothe. He died of a wound infection a few weeks later.
