The Black Rock ( English for Black Rock ) is a small and dark reef rock in the southern Indian Ocean . It is 20 meters northwest of Morgan Island and 195 meters north of Heard Island .
The rock was roughly mapped in 1860 by the American seal hunter H. C. Chester, who was operating in the waters around Heard Island at the time. The descriptive name was first recorded on maps around 1932. These probably arose as a result of the work of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE, 1929–1931) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson .
