content

Jiro Azuma has been able to talk to animals since he was a child. Often times this got him into trouble and as a child he was teased by others. As a teenager, he is often involved in fights, which are also related to his ability. His grandfather, who teaches him the ninja techniques of his family, always scolds him and hits him again and again. One day, Jiro picks up an injured black cat who turns out to be the Mononoke Rago. He woke up from a long sleep and has now been attacked by other spirits who want his power. Soon there will be another fight with a demon. Jiro interferes again and does not want to abandon the Rago he has just rescued. Jiro is fatally injured. Rago saves his life by uniting himself with him. Shortly afterwards, they are caught by “the authorities”, a government organization working to combat Mononoke. They used to be the Oniwaban. Shortly afterwards, Jiro escapes them to say goodbye to his grandfather. But he challenges him to fight, because he was also with the authorities and doubts Jiro's strength to control the Mononoke. Finally, Jiro can convince his grandfather and then goes into the care of the authorities. People there are still skeptical whether they should kill him because of the great danger posed by Rago. But the head of the special department, Ryosuke Shiba, who picked up Jiro, wants to form a new special unit with him. Jiro now forms a group with Ichika Kishimojin, a young fighter from a ninja family who helped Jiro's arrest, and Reiji Kirihara, the offspring of a respected spy family. Especially with Reiji, who looks down on the coarse Jiro, there are conflicts and the group only has to pull itself together during training.

During their first outing, the group will learn the reason for Rago's liberation from its centuries-old seal. Rago remembers little of the sealing stone in a temple. A group of demons wanted to ally with him against people and authorities, but he had no desire and fought his way outside. You are surprised and attacked by the Mononoke Koga. He wants to win Rago as his partner and it comes to a fight in which the two young fighters can barely survive. Because of the arrival of another unit, Koga flees. After gaining little information, the group needs further training. With the help of an allied Mononoke, they have to face their fears: Ichika, her mother, who is petrified while working as a spy. Reiji his brother, who was possessed by a sword at an initiation ceremony, murdered his father and disappeared. Jiro and Rago learn about Rago's past as a local temple god in the vision of the Mononoke. When the Mononoke Amagi offered to fight with him against the newly founded Oniwaban. Rago refuses because he wants to live in peace, and Amagi destroys the village he is protecting, leaving Rago no choice. But he defeats him and seals himself in the stone. It was Amagi too, Rago remembers, who has now freed him again.

Soon after, Amagis Mononoke attacked the city. The authorities are narrowing them down and Shiba's group is supposed to fight them. Ichika can easily arrest the hypnotic Mononoke Roren and Jiro kills the most powerful demon with Rago's strength. But Reiji meets his brother, against whom he cannot compete. His brother always felt inferior to him, as he was always treated particularly severely as an heir and everything seemed easy for Reiji. Hence he fell under the power of the sword. Eventually Jiro meets the superior Amagi himself, who demands Rago's allegiance if he is to spare Jiro. When Rago is released from Jiro, another special unit attacks and the Mononoke have to flee. Soon after, Amagi realizes that he has Rago, but he left all his strength in Jiro. The authorities are now even more suspicious of Jiro, as Ragos can hardly control his strength and this leads Jiro to a frenzy. So Jiro is sent to the forest of the Mononoke Ibuki, where he is to learn to control his power or to be killed by it. Jiro not only succeeds in surviving in the forest, but also wins Ibuki's sympathy so that she helps him control his strength. At the same time, Amagi eats all of the Mononoke allies with him in order to acquire their own strength and prepare for the coming fight. When Koga learns of Amagi's cannibalism, he can barely escape it. With no other aim, he goes to the agency, which is already facing Amagi's attack, to support them. Jiro goes straight to Amagi to face him with his newfound power. Jiro and Rago manage to reunite and give Amagi a decisive blow, so that he has to withdraw. Jiro remains part of the authority along with Rago and his teammates to fight other Mononoke.
