from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company (MR&C) was a railway company in South Wales .

On June 3, 1792, the Blaenavon Tramroad was established to build a mine railway from the ironworks in Blaenavon to the end of the Monmouthshire Canal in Pontnewydd . The width of the ruts of the line opened in 1795/1796 was 1,016 meters (3 feet, 4 inches). In 1829 the line was rebuilt and the gauge was now 1.27 meters (4 feet, 2 inches).

On July 31, 1845, the company was reorganized into the Monmouthshire Railway and Canal Company. On July 1, 1852, the railway between Newport and Pontypool opened and on October 2, 1854, the extension on the track bed of the former Blaenavon Tramroad to Blaenavon. In 1860 the West Midland Railway tried to lease the company, but it failed. However, the company was given the opportunity to run the business. In 1870 two short connections to Cwmfrwdoer and Cwmnantddu were opened. Another connection was opened in 1879 to Abersychan and Tylawain.

On August 1, 1875, the Great Western Railway leased the company for 99 years and finally took it over on August 1, 1880.
