Blairquhan House

Blairquhan House , also Blairquhan Castle , is a manor house near the Scottish village of Straiton in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

At the location of the current building there was a previous building, which was built around 1570. In 1813 the Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham was commissioned to plan a redesign of this building, which was ultimately not carried out. Five years later Robert Wallace was hired to design a new building. These plans were not implemented either. The present mansion was based on a design by William Burn in 1824. A few fragments of the previous building were incorporated into the structure. Today Blairquhan House is open for viewing on a daily basis and can be rented for weddings. Overnight accommodation has been set up in some outbuildings.

description

The mansion is isolated on extensive grounds on the south bank of the Water of Girvan around 1.5 km northwest of Straiton. It is designed in the Tudor style, which revived in the 19th century.
