Straiton is a village in the Scottish council area of South Ayrshire . It is located in the south of the region around ten kilometers southeast of Maybole and 23 kilometers southwest of Cumnock . The Water of Girvan flows along the southwest flank .
history
Thomas Kennedy, 9th Earl of Cassilis , had Straiton built as a planned settlement around 1760. The Black Bull Inn , Traboyack House and Straiton Parish Church are still preserved from this period . All three buildings are listed, with the church being classified as a monument of the highest category A. The village in the catchment area of Blairquhan Castle developed with forestry. Edward Hunter-Blair, 4th Baronet, had Straiton rebuilt around 1900 .
While in the 19th century there were still more than 1000 inhabitants in Straiton, there were only 146 in 1961. By 1991 the number of inhabitants rose to 196.
