Blake Hall
Blake Hall is a mansion and gardens in the United Kingdom . It is located at Chipping Ongar in the county of Essex .
The building is based on a structure from the 17th century that was fundamentally rebuilt and expanded in the 18th century. Another renovation took place in 1822 by the architect George Basevi , a student of John Soane . The manor house has been owned by the Capel-Cure family since 1789.
In September 1940, the German Air Force bombed the control center of the nearby RAF North Weald base during the Battle of Britain , whereupon the Royal Air Force claimed the south wing of Blake Hall for itself. In the process, she tore down interior walls and ceilings to make room for a new control center. The entire property with park and outbuildings is listed in the British monuments lists as a Grade II ensemble. The main building itself is protected as a Grade II * structure. There are also nine other Grade II individual monuments on the property.
Blake Hall Underground Station, which closed in 1981, is known for the manor house, although it is about a mile to the southwest.
