The Blanford-bat ( Sphaerias blanfordi ) is a mammal of the family of flying foxes and the only species of the genus Sphaerias . The type epithet honors the English zoologist William Thomas Blanford .

features

With a head-torso length of 64 to 80 mm and a forearm length of 50 to 52 mm, the species is one of the smaller fruit bats. One tail is missing. The soft and dense fur has a gray-brown color on top, while the underside is lighter. It is characterized by the tail flight skin ( uropatagium ) formed as a narrow strip along the thighs to the upper part of the lower legs. The crowns of the closely spaced incisors are triangular and pointed. There is no second cusp on the crowns of the canines, which distinguishes the species from the genus Cynopterus .

Distribution and way of life

The Blanford flying fox occurs with several separate populations in Asia from Nepal , northern India and southern China to Thailand and Vietnam . The flying fox can be found in the hill country and in mountains between 308 and 2710 meters above sea level. The species is often recorded in forests with a bamboo undergrowth , it is also found in coniferous and oak forests.

Specimens of the species were caught in nets that reached just 0.8 to 1.5 meters above the ground, suggesting the Blanford flying fox is a low-flying species.

status

This fruit bat is potentially threatened by habitat degradation. Since it occurs frequently in areas of its distribution area, it is listed by the IUCN as Least Concern .
