Bright braking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bright braking is a term from metal cutting and describes the appearance of shiny stripes on the surface of the workpiece due to blunt cutting tools .

The bright braking mainly occurs with tools made of high-speed steels , since tool wear on the steel is mainly initiated by high temperatures and leads to flank wear. The melted cutting edge then rubs along the workpiece, compressing and smoothing the material, which can then be perceived as a shiny strip.
