The pigeon dust ( Columbina buckleyi ) is a type of pigeon bird , which is counted to the subfamily of the American small pigeons . The species occurs exclusively in South America and its population is not endangered.

Appearance

The pebbles reach a body length of 18 centimeters. It is roughly the size of a star . The appearance of the pebbles is very similar to the dwarf dove . The plumage on the top of the head and neck is blue-gray. The rest of the upper side of the body is matt gray-brown. A gender dimorphism is present. The female is generally a bit more brownish in feathery. In the male, the breast plumage is clearly tinged with pink.

Distribution and way of life

The distribution area of ​​the pebbles extends from the northwest of Ecuador to the northwest of Peru. It has a small distribution area compared to other species of Columbina . It is an adaptable species and inhabits semi-humid to semi-arid habitats up to a height of 1,000 meters above sea level. The habitat are dry, light deciduous forests and mixed forests with isolated thickets. It is insensitive to logging. It also inhabits secondary forest and looks for food on adjacent agricultural land. In northern Peru it is also found in gardens and in areas where rice is grown. The Buckley pigeon is mostly on the ground during the day. The diet consists mainly of seeds. It builds a bowl nest similar to the songbirds. The clutch consists of two eggs. The incubation period is 14 days. The young birds fledge after twelve days.

Keeping in human care

The pebbles were first shown in Europe in 1915 at London Zoo. However, the species is relatively seldom imported and therefore only plays a minor role in wild pigeon keeping.

Subspecies

There are two known subspecies:

  • Columbina buckleyi buckleyi ( Sclater, PL & Salvin , 1877) occurs in the north-west of Ecuador to the north-west of Peru.
  • Columbina buckleyi dorsti ( Koepcke , 1962) is common in the Marañón Valley.
