The blue-capped amazon ( Amazona finschi ) is a species of parrot from the subfamily of the New World parrots . The blue-capped amazon was named after the German explorer and ornithologist Otto Finsch .

description

The basic color of the plumage of this Amazon species, which is 33 centimeters tall, is green. The plumage on the underside of the body is a little paler and more yellowish. The back part of the head, the sides of the neck and the nape of the neck are bluish, the feathers are darkly lined in these areas. The cheeks and the ear covers, on the other hand, are of a yellowish green, without the feathers having dark hems. The forehead as well as the front part of the head and the reins of the eyes are feathered chestnut brown. The hand wings are blue-violet in color. The beak is horn-colored, the iris orange to red. The feet, on the other hand, are greenish-gray in color. The species has no sexual dimorphism .

distribution and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the blue-capped amazon is western Mexico. It occurs there mainly at altitudes between 500 and 1800 meters. Their habitat are the wooded foothills and low mountain regions.

Lifestyle and social behavior

During the breeding season, the birds can be seen mostly in pairs or in small groups. Outside the breeding season, the birds can often be seen in very large flocks of two hundred to three hundred individuals. Blue-capped amazons, like other Amazon parrots, live on seeds, fruits, berries, nuts, and buds. They also invade agricultural areas and cause damage in particular on banana plantations and grain fields.

Threat and protection

The total population of the blue-capped amazon is estimated at 7,000 to 10,000 birds and is classified as endangered by the IUCN . Since 2004 the species has been listed in Appendix I of the Washington Convention on the Protection of Species .

The species is kept and successfully bred by both private individuals and zoos.
