Former National Geographic photographer Charles O'Rear took the picture in January 1996 in the California wine-growing region of Sonoma County near Napa using a Mamiya RZ67 on Fujifilm Velvia . It shows a hill originally used for viticulture, which was covered with grass due to phylloxera infestation. According to O'Rear, the original image, which is used for Windows XP, has not been digitally edited.

It inspired the advertising campaign for the introduction of Windows XP, as the positive, dominant blue and green tones corresponded to the colors of the product.

The artist group Goldin + Senneby took up the now changed motif again ten years later and showed their work After Microsoft for the first time in 2007 in Paris.
