Blowin 'away Best of Joan C. Baez
(1977)

Blowin 'Away is a 1977 album by Joan Baez. It is the first since she switched from A&M Records to Portrait Records (a then newly created division of CBS Records ). The sound of this album turned more towards mainstream pop than any other album Baez had recorded before. Critics pointed out that their "new sound" didn't seem entirely satisfactory. The titles include the cover version of Rod Stewart's hit Sailing and the standard Cry Me a River along with original compositions by Joan Baez.

In the sardonic own composition Time Rag Baez tells of an aborted interview with a Time - Reporter. In the course of the song she admits that the studio bosses wanted her to have a special image so that the songs would sell even better. “I really should tell you that deep in my heart / I don't give a damn where I stand on the charts,” she comments ironically towards the end of the song.

“Curious about his interest
I babbled my way through the worldwide list
Ireland, Chile and the African states
Poetry, politics and how they relate
Motherhood, music and Moog synthesizers
Political prisoners and Commie sympathizers
Hetero, homo and bisexuality
Where they all stood in the nineteen -seventies. "

- From Time Rag

Baez wrote the title Altar Boy and the Thief as a tribute to her gay fans.

In her autobiography We Shall Overcome   , Baez described Blowin 'Away as a good album with a terrible cover.
