The flower island (also known as snake island) is the largest island in the Wörthersee . It extends from east to west over 470 meters and has a maximum width of 95 meters. A part is under landscape protection . Most of the island is in the municipality of Pörtschach , but a strip along the south bank is on that of Maria Wörth .

Access

The island can be reached all year round via a 100 meter long wooden bridge. This connects the east of the island with the Landspitz , the southwestern extension of the Pörtschach peninsula .

structure

The eastern part belongs to the promenade pool of the municipality of Pörtschach, the rest is wooded.

Development

The flower island is not built on, but a place in the eastern part has been influenced by human activity. There are a couple of buoys with sailboats in this part. Most of the bank is covered with reeds .

history

The flower island only "appeared" in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since the water level was lowered in 1770, not only the island of Maria Wörth had become a peninsula, but also the flower island became visible. In the following time the water level sank more and more. For several years the ships of the Wörtherseeschifffahrtsgesellschaft drove between the island and the peninsula. Eventually it got too shallow for that.

The name Snake Island is not due to the fact that snakes live there, but because the island is shaped like a snake. When part of her came to the lido, her name was changed to Flower Island.
