The Hoverhof ground monument is part of the Hoverhof district in the Schildgen district of Bergisch Gladbach .

description

Historically and in terms of cultural landscape, the Hoverhof and its surroundings are one of the most important settlement areas on the central Dhünn . The traces can be traced back to the 13th century.

building

Today's Hoverhof consists of a network of historic residential and farm buildings with modern stables. On the southern side of Altenberger-Dom-Straße there are also the old mill building of the Scharrenberger Mühle , also known as the Hover Mühle , and the miller's adjoining house.

Waters and ditches

Only parts of the former moats that were needed to operate the mill have survived. A water-bearing depression can be seen over a 100 m long stretch. Several trenches are buried or built as a farm road.

Archeology and Expectation of Findings

In the last few centuries structural changes have taken place in the area of the Hoverhof and the mill to the south-east, which have almost certainly been preserved in the soil as soil discolouration, wall remains and other finds and findings. On the basis of scientific experience, it can be assumed that traces of the associated activities and remnants of the earlier development have been preserved underground as soil archives.

Ground monument

From a heritage conservation point of view, the Hoverhof is one of the most important medieval courtyards in the Dhünntal. It owes its development to the Altenberg monastery since the High Middle Ages . This led to a supraregional importance, which was taken into account by the Altenberg Monastery Landscape project for the 2010 Regional . The Hoverhof, the water mills belonging to it and the archaeological relics / evidence preserved underground are important for the economic and settlement history of the Bergisches Land . They extend over the municipality of Odenthal as well as the cities of Bergisch Gladbach and Leverkusen and meet the requirements for entry as a permanent ground monument in the list of protected monuments. There is a public interest in the protection.

The scope of protection includes:

  • The weir on the Dhünn, the Obergraben and the pond in the municipality of Odenthal,
  • the courtyard, the mills, the upper ditch on the Schwarzbroicher Bach and the former Untergraben with the ruined Neumühle mill in the town of Bergisch Gladbach,
  • the remaining undermine until it entered the Dhünn in the city of Leverkusen.

The ground monument is entered in the list of ground monuments in Bergisch Gladbach under No. 21 and in the list of Odenthal ground monuments under No. 11.
