The Bodominjärvi [ ˈbuːduminjærvi ] (Swedish Bodom träsk [ ˈbuːdum trɛsk ]) is a lake in Espoo , a neighboring city of Helsinki . The name comes from its location in the Bodom district.
The lake became known beyond Finland in 1960 when three out of four youths camping by the lake were murdered on June 5th. The victims were the two 15-year-old girls Maila Irmeli Björklund and Anja Tuulikki Mäki and the 18-year-old Seppo Antero Boisman. According to the fourth youth, 18-year-old Nils Gustafsson, who was seriously injured, the four were ambushed by a man. Unable to remember, Gustafsson was placed under hypnosis and a profile was created, but investigations did not yield any results. For this reason, horror tales and legends about the lake emerged.
When the case was re-examined in 2004, the survivor, now 62 years old and a multiple father, came under suspicion through an analysis of old traces of DNA . In June 2005 it was announced that Gustafsson would be charged as a suspected triple murderer. His guilt was negotiated in late summer 2005 with great media attention.
In October 2005, Nils Gustafsson was acquitted. The court stated that the vast majority of evidence suggests that the act was committed by an unknown additional person. The Bodom murder remains unsolved.
The metal band Children of Bodom named themselves in 1997 after this incident. To commemorate the victims, they dedicated a song to each of their first six albums.
