Bodoni is the name for a series of classicist antiqua fonts that go back to the Italian Giambattista Bodoni . Along with the typefaces of Didot and Walbaum, it is one of the best-known typefaces of classicism . The contrast between the base and hairlines is particularly great here. The serifs are not rounded, they appear as flat lines that are horizontally attached to the lines. The impression is sometimes described as downright geometric.

Bodoni was particularly inspired by the work of John Baskerville . He also studied the writings of his French competitors Pierre Simon Fournier and Firmin Didot very carefully , although he found his own style.

Digital versions of this font, like many classical antiqua fonts, often suffer from the fact that in smaller font sizes the serifs and hairlines become too thin to be read. At the same time, the base bars in large font sizes are very bold, which is why better digitizations often have font styles with different degrees of contrast for different sizes, often referred to by the English term "optical sizes".
