The Boeselager competition was a military versatility competition of the tank reconnaissance battalions of the German armed forces and their allies .

Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager donated the competition in 1970 in memory of his brother Georg Freiherr von Boeselager, who died in World War II .

history

After only the eleven German tank reconnaissance battalions competed with each other in the first few years, teams from around ten NATO countries and France were added in 1976. It was held annually from 1970 and from 1988 to 1996 every two years over one week, alternating at the locations of the German tank reconnaissance battalions. In 1998 a competition was originally planned, but the execution had to be canceled due to the commitment of the Bundeswehr in the Balkans. The general expansion of the Bundeswehr's alliance obligations prompted the Army Inspector to suspend the Boeselager competition altogether.

Disciplines

The individual disciplines were: patrol parcours, night orientation march (approx. 20 km), helicopter reconnaissance flight, tank skill driving, tank and enemy detection service, cross-country run with overcoming natural and artificial obstacles (approx. 3.5 km), shooting with the STAN weapon, swimming with a tent sheet package in standing or flowing water (in combat or neoprene suit).
