The name is a professional name derived from the profession of fire man (stoker). The name consists of the Low German words "böten" = to kindle, turn on, poke and "for" = fire.

The name also appears in the forms "Bötefeuer", "Bötefür", "Fürböter". Bötefür also has the meaning of incitator in Low German , like Boutefeu in French .

Known occurrences: The Boetefeur merchant family existed in Hamburg in the 17th and 18th centuries, and they provided numerous council members and members of the senior elders. Johann Joachim Boetefeur was senator from 1695-1761, Joachim Boetefeur was president of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce from 1709 to 1710 . One of his great-great-grandsons was Johann Friedrich Albrecht August Meyer .
