The Boeung Kak was until 2011 a lake in the northern part of Phnom Penh , Cambodia .

development

The many guesthouses on the lakeside, the east bank of the lake, were popular with backpackers . Atmospheric sunsets and good, inexpensive food could be enjoyed on the jetty-like wooden terraces built into the lake for the guests. A small number of accommodations are still available today, but the flair of bygone years is gone.

In 2007, the government under Prime Minister Hun Sen leased the lake and the surrounding area for 99 years. The investment company Shukaku wants to build a whole new district there with the help of Chinese investors . The Boeung Kak Lake was filled with sand between 2010 and 2012 to make room for new, profitable investments such as luxury apartments and high-rise office buildings.

In 2011 around 10,000 people lived around Lake Boeung Kak in the middle of Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh. There were more than twice as many residents there in 2010 before the forced resettlements began under threat of violence. The World Bank intervened in response to violently suppressed protests . As long as there is no satisfactory agreement between the government and residents of the Boeung Kak Lake, financial aid of up to 70 million US dollars annually would be suspended.

The sentencing of thirteen demonstrators in May 2012 in a three-hour trial without lawyers to several years in prison aroused international criticism.

As recently as March 2015, the majority of the area of the former lake was fallow, and a coherent overall concept of development was not discernible.

In November 2015, the start of two construction projects, 'The Centric' in the northwest and 'One Park' in the west of the former lake, both residential and commercial buildings. Shukaku Inc. is responsible for the development of the remaining area with the 'Phnom Penh City Center' project, a 'sales center' was built on the southern edge of the site.

Currently (as of 2019) around a third of the area is built on, including a shopping center and various residential and commercial buildings. Construction projects started in 2015 have been completed.
