Mammillaria insularis is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet insularis means ' coming from islands'.

description

Mammillaria insularis sometimes grows individually but usually in groups. The flattened, mostly spherical, blue-green plant bodies are up to 6 centimeters high and 5 centimeters in diameter. The roots are fleshy. The individual warts are conical in shape and have no milky sap . The axillae are bare or covered with a few bristles. The hooked central spine has a brown tip and is 1 centimeter long. The 20 to 30 radial spines are needle-like white and up to 0.5 centimeters in size.

The 1.5 to 2.5 cm large funnel-shaped flowers are light pink. The fruits are up to 1 centimeter in size and are club-shaped and orange-red in color. The seeds are black.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria insularis is common in the Mexican state of Baja California on the islands and the mainland near Bahía de los Ángeles .

It was first described in 1938 by Howard Elliott Gates .

Synonyms are the following described species: Ebnerella insularis (HEGates) Buxb. (1951), Chilita insularis (HEGates) Buxb. , (1954, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3) and Bartschella insularis (HEGates) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
