The Bohrmühle Büren is a mill in the town of Büren in Westphalia and was first mentioned in 1617.

History and location

The mill is probably much older, as records from 1617 mentioned "a nigges wheel at the drilling mill". In 1745 it was moved from the Afte to its current location and changed hands several times.

Today it is located on the so-called Mühlengraben (separated from the Alme ) opposite the Mittelmühle . They are connected via the weir between the two mills. While it used to belong exclusively to the city of Büren, half of it was transferred to the Jesuits in a contract of 1732 . In the meantime it is again in the sole possession of the city of Büren and is managed by the Heimatverein Büren e. V. operated as a museum together with the Mittelmühle.

In the mill, the respective water master (or pipe master) processed logs from the local forests into approx. 3.40 m long wooden water pipes, so-called dicks . For this purpose, a drill was operated by its own mill wheel. The powered spoon drill provided a water pipe with an inside diameter of approx. 7 cm.

The drill has now been reconstructed and can be viewed. The mill wheel is currently not available.

The drilling mill had a special meaning for Büren - only with it it was possible to build and maintain the 1.7 km long water pipe (first mentioned in 1568) from the so-called “Piepenbusch” (spring) to the town in a Kump (water basin) to keep. This ensured that the people of Büren were supplied with fresh spring water. A Kump is still preserved today and stands in front of the parish church in Büren.
