Middle mill (left) and drill mill

The Mittelmühle is an old paint mill in the Almetal and one of two old mills in Büren in Westphalia . It is one of the few remaining paint mills in northern Germany. In the years 2007 to 2008 the mill was converted into a mill museum (adventure mill ). The drilling mill on the opposite side of the Mühlengraben was also repaired and can be viewed on guided tours.

history

The first mention of the middle mill goes back to the year 1335, at that time it was mentioned in the castle peace treaty. It was built at the instigation of the noblemen of Büren . The part of the mill building that still stands today was built in 1532. It was just outside the Büren city fortifications, at the so-called "Mühlenpforte". In 1662 it passed into the possession of the Jesuits through inheritance rights . After the Jesuit order was abolished , it became the property of Haus Büren'scher Fonds around 1830 . The mill was powered by a water wheel. Three grinding courses were held in the mill. Used as a flour mill until the beginning of the 20th century, calcite and other types of stone were ground there from 1928 to 1966 to add color. After the death of the last miller, the mill fell into disrepair. In 2006 it was bought by the city of Büren. The restoration of the mill then began in 2007. The mill has been operated as a museum by the Büren local history association since 2009 and can be visited on guided tours.

Since 1754, on the opposite bank of the Mühlbach, the drilling mill , in which the wooden pipes for the municipal water pipeline were drilled, has been located. This serves to lead the water from the urban springs in the "Piepenbusch" to various kumps (including the kump on the market square). This mill was moved there from its original location in the Aftetal.
