The lithophagous molluscs (Pholadidae), and True lithophagous molluscs called, are a mussel Family from the order of Myida . The family has been known since the Bajocium (Middle Jurassic).
features
The housings are equally hinged and greatly elongated, mostly gaping at the front and back. Often, secondary shell formations (protoplax, mesoplax, metaplax and siphonoplax) appear in addition to the two valves of the housing. The front end is often elongated like a beak, the front dorsal margin is turned over.
The ligament lies internally under the vertebrae on a chondrophore , it can also be reduced. The lock is toothless. The two sphincters are unequal in size. The posterior sphincter is large and is close to the ventral margin. The smaller, anterior sphincter muscle lies on the anterior, folded dorsal margin. The jacket is deeply indented, the jacket bay extends approximately into the middle of the housing. The edge of the mantle is largely fused ventrally. There are openings for the foot and the long siphons . The foot is short without linen. The end of the siphons can be closed with lime plates (pallets).
The shell is aragonitic with a variable microstructure, usually with an outer prism layer, a middle cross-lamellar layer and an inner complex-cross-lamellar or homogeneous layer. The ornamentation in the front part of the case consists of strong radial ribs or sinusoidally curved ribs parallel to the edge, which can be reinforced with thorns or spikes. The rear end is only weakly ornamented.
Geographical distribution and way of life
The family is spread around the world. They live boring in semi-solid or solid sediments.
Taxonomy
The taxon was introduced by Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck as Les pholadaires . Since the name was ascribed to Lamarck in the later Latinization, Lamarck is also considered the author of the taxon, not the author who was the first to Latinize the taxon. MolluscaBase assigns the following genera to the family in three subfamilies:
- Family borer mussels (Pholadidae)
- Subfamily Jouannetiinae Tryon, 1862
- Jouannetia Desmoulins, 1828
