The Boia Mica Valley is a valley in the southwestern part of the Făgăraș Mountains in Romania . It is part of the Natura 2000 protected area .
Flora and fauna
In addition to the primeval forests in the taiga of Northern Russia and the primeval forest areas in Scandinavia, one of the last untouched primeval forests in Europe can be found in the Boia Mica Valley. Several trees over 400 years old are significant, including a beech that is estimated to be 500 to 520 years old . This makes it the oldest beech tree in Romania.
As in the rest of the Făgăraș Mountains, brown bears are found here .
Deforestation controversy
The Boia Mica Valley received more attention from reports that the forests there would be cut down. In response, several nature conservation organizations called for better protection of the last virgin forests in Romania, as deforestation is taking place even though the forests are in Natura 2000 protected areas. The forests meet the criteria to be protected as primeval forests, but have not yet been registered as such. This means that they do not enjoy adequate protection in accordance with the Romanian Forest Act.
