The BOLA - House of Cultures Ruhr is a culture and educational establishment in Bochum with a media center and overnight accommodation. It emerged as a project of German associations in the international network of the regionally and internationally active, non-profit network and umbrella organization proKulturgut.net eV since 2000

The associations cooperate with the cultural offices and youth welfare offices of the cities of Bochum and Essen, Youth for Europe, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and as an organizer and partner of the "extra layer" with RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture .

From 2005 to 2009, the project was housed in a listed, former farm building in the Steele district of Essen , near the Essen-Steele-Ost S-Bahn station. In 2010 it moved to the former Naturfreundehaus Bochum Dahlhausen - now known as "BOLA Kulturhostel Ruhr" and "BOLA Bildungsstätte" of the Academy of Cultures North Rhine-Westphalia. This is where European and non-European cultures from all continents meet and present themselves.

The initiators are aimed at people who, through the visual and performing arts, music, literature, media, education as well as trade and economy, contribute to developing understanding and togetherness in the sense of the one-world idea.

In the tradition of the European festivals organized by the sponsoring association since 2003, exhibitions, jazz and world music concerts, conferences and seminars of the Academy of Cultures North Rhine-Westphalia as well as international youth exchange projects take place in the BOLA educational facility.

Since 2012, the non-profit institutes in the BOLA have been organizing the "Ruhrstadt-Festival.de", an intercultural project with the idea of creating a borderless Ruhr area, in cooperation with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Bochum and others, with many other local, regional and international partners. To give culture new space and to strengthen the identity of the Ruhr region.
