history

The mosque community was founded by Turkish guest workers and was originally called "Society of Turkish workers in Hamburg and the surrounding area for the establishment and construction of a mosque". In the building, which was acquired in 1977, there was a bathing establishment at the turn of the century, the former Hammonia bath . In 1990 a new building was started, which was docked to the old building. Upon completion, there was a dome and two minarets on top. This made the building recognizable as a mosque from the outside. The then Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan , who was the leader of the Milli Görüs movement at the time, also attended the laying of the foundation stone in 1992 . In 2001 the name of the association was changed to "Islamic Community Hamburg - Centrum-Moschee eV".

Controversy

The mosque community came into public discussion when it became known in 2006 that anti-Jewish children's films that glorified violence were being sold in the mosque's bookstore. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the film "The Children of the Al-Aqsa Mosque" incites aversion to Jews in a tendentious and malicious manner. The evangelical press service epd commented that “also from the point of view of depicting violence, this film is completely unsuitable for children”. The four-part series comes from Iran and is distributed by a publisher based in Turkey. As a further indication of the spread of anti-Semitic literature within the Islamic Community of Millî Görüş , the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution assessed the fact that books by Harun Yahya were also advertised in an advertising brochure enclosed with the DVD . According to the mosque community, the person in charge of the bookstore was dismissed in May 2006. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution suspects Turkish Islamists from the Milli Görüş movement behind the distribution of the DVD . In the meantime, however, the mosque appears in a different light. The protection of the constitution has given up the observation of the IGMG in Hamburg and justified this with a change in the views of the members and the community. Only organizations and people who are assigned to certain circles within the Millî Görüş movement are observed.

Linden Bazaar

The "Lindenbazar" in St. Georg is run by the Centrumsgemeinde and serves to finance its activities. A necessary conversion failed years ago due to a lack of financing options. The Hamburg Senate released the mosque from the obligation to renovate and canceled an urban development contract that made the renovation necessary. Since it was founded in 1999, the Lindenbazar has been promoting vocational training for young people with a migration background and Turkish, Kurdish, Russian, Chechen, Bosnian and Afghan roots. The approximately 55 employees include seven trainees in the professions of office clerk, travel agent, retail clerk and salesperson. For this commitment, the former mayor Ole von Beust awarded the “Lindenbazar Handels GmbH” the “Diversity in Education 2007” award. Ahmet Yazici is the managing director of Lindenbazar Handels GmbH .

Minaret art project

Minarets of the Centrum Mosque in July 2011

The minarets of the Centrum Mosque were painted in a new pattern of green and white hexagons in 2009 through a collaboration between the artist Boran Burchhardt and the management of the mosque. The project generated great interest worldwide. It was the first time that a work of art was made from a part of a building that externally identifies a mosque as such and is also transportable.

The then bishop of the North Elbe Church, Maria Jepsen, supported the Muslims' concern for a daily muezzin call.
