The Bolchowitinow S , also: BBS-1 ( Russian Болховитинов С, ББС-1 ) was a Soviet bomber .

development

The Bolchowitinow S was an attempt by Viktor Bolchowitinows to create a light close-range bomber with as little air resistance as possible in order to achieve the best possible flight performance. He therefore decided to arrange the two engines one behind the other in the fuselage, which gave the aircraft a long nose. The two-man crew was accommodated in a cabin with a long glass roof. In order to ensure an optimal field of fire to the rear for defense, the vertical stabilizer was constructed from two end plates attached to the right and left of the elevator. The wing, which was arranged in a low -wing design, consisted entirely of metal. The rear wheel landing gear could be fully retracted, with the main wheels pivoting 90 °.

The machine was completed in 1939 and began testing in the spring of the following year. It turned out that although the model performed well in flight, there were repeated problems with the gearbox of the rear engine. Attempts to fly the Samoljot S with only one engine, however, let the top speed drop so rapidly that it was not worth continuing the program. The type still received a landing gear on skis and is said to have also been used for testing ramjet engines, but the whole project was finally abandoned at the end of 1940, especially since the Petlyakov Pe-2 , which was under development, performed significantly better could.
