Bolkiah (Brunei)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sultan Bolkiah ruled the Sultanate of Brunei on the north coast of Borneo from 1485 to 1521 . He was the fifth sultan of Brunei. He ascended the throne of Brunei after the abdication of his father Sulayman . Brunei prospered under Sultan Bolkiah, but he was dissatisfied with the progress and urged his ministers and advisers to think about ways to accelerate the country's development.

He often traveled abroad to broaden his horizons and knowledge: the new ideas he brought with him should be carefully studied before they could be introduced, for the benefit of the people and the country.

Sultan Bolkiah's victory over Sulu and Saludang and his marriage to Princess Lela Mechanai of Sulu and the daughter of Datu Kemin expanded Brunei's influence in the Philippines . This promoted the prosperity of Brunei and also the Islamic mission in the region. The influence and power of Brunei reached its peak under the reign of Sultan Bolkiah.

Sultan Bolkiah's successor was his son Abdul Kahar after his death .

Magellan's circumnavigation

Bolkiah could have been the ruler the remainder of the Magellan's expedition found on the north coast of Borneo in 1521. Antonio Pigafetta's account mentions a powerful ruler on the island of Burne whose guests they were.

Opposite his area of rule, on the other side of a river estuary, there was another, competing prince, not a Muslim, but with a comparable amount of power. This detail and the age of the prince, described by Pigafetta at around 40, make it doubtful that the crew of Sebastiano Elcano, Magellan's successor as expedition captain, had met this Sultan Bolkiah; the power of the Sultan of Brunei was unchallenged in all of Borneo and in the western parts of the Philippine island empire at that time. The Spaniards' expedition may have had contact with another regional prince who was a vassal of Sultan Bolkiah.
