Boluminski Highway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Boluminski Highway is the main road on New Ireland in Papua New Guinea . It leads from the capital Kavieng 264 km along the east coast of the island to Namatanai . About 120 km to Bol Village the road is paved, from there to Namatanai the surface consists of gravel coral .

The highway was named after Franz Boluminski , who was station manager and district administrator of northern Neumecklenburg from 1900 to 1913 .

Boluminski had the population of the villages on the east coast of the island build a paved road to create a connection between the plantations, where mainly coconut palms were grown for copra production. The street was named Kaiser-Wilhelm-Chaussee .

Each village was given the task of building and maintaining a section of the road. Boluminski held competitions among the villages with rewards and threats of punishment. If a section was not maintained and repaired, the villagers had to carry their wagons on horseback through the holes in the road. Despite these unusual methods, Baron Boluminski enjoys sustained popularity on the island.

In 1921 Neumecklenburg was renamed back to New Ireland and Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße was named East Coast Road . It was the best road in Papua and New Guinea until the 1950s . When Papua New Guinea gained independence in 1975, the road was named Boluminski Highway .

Today the road is the main thoroughfare and lifeline of the island.
