Namatanai is a town on the island of New Ireland in Papua New Guinea , New Ireland Province . With around 1,300 inhabitants (2005), Namatanai is the second largest settlement on the island and the administrative center of the southern part of New Ireland. From Namatanai you can reach the gold mines on the island of Niolam . The city is connected to Kavieng , the capital of the province located 264 km northwest, by the Boluminski Highway .

From 1904 to 1914 Namatanai was the administrative seat for the district of Neumecklenburg- Süd of the German New Guinea colony as a government station . The Namatanai hotel is located in the upper part of the old German station building.

Namatanai has a small airfield with the IATA airport code ATN.
