Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy (BCGS) is a collaboration between the Universities of Bonn and Cologne , in which students of physics the Master - and doctoral degrees can achieve. The BCGS has been supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of the Excellence Initiative since 2007 .

Education

The BCGS accepts good students from all over the world after completing their bachelor’s degree . In a competitive process (admissions week), scholarships are awarded for the master’s degree. In line with the Anglo-Saxon degree, there is already the firm intention of starting the degree at BCGS to move on to the doctoral degree as seamlessly as possible after completing the master’s degree.

The declared aim of the BCGS is the early involvement of students in research ( early on research ) before the start of the master's thesis as well as the continuation of learning during the research for the doctorate ( continued learning ). Students are looked after by a mentor at the participating universities from the start of their master’s degree.

Courses

As part of the BCGS, students can attend events in Cologne and Bonn. To make this easier, some events are broadcast as video conferences, while others take place alternately at both study locations.

In addition, various intensive weeks are offered every semester that deal with a topic for a whole day outside of the lecture period.

Regular events

In the course of the academic year, the BCGS organizes a number of fixed events, which usually take place alternately in Bonn and Cologne.

At the opening event in autumn, the newly admitted students for the winter semester will be welcomed. A guest speaker is giving a lecture on a current topic in physics - Michael Berry and Walter Kutschera, among others, have spoken in the past .

In spring, at a poster session, the students of the higher semesters present their research activities and results on posters. In addition to suggestions for the posters, these events offer the younger students an overview of the current research topics at both universities.

Every summer, under the title Science meets Business , a physicist speaks about his - often unusual - career outside the university.
