An octoban is a set with up to 24 single-headed tube drums, tuned to a range of two octaves, similar to bongos , and is used as a melody or accompanying instrument. The sound fits in well with that of other tuned percussion instruments such as the marimba ; it is duller, deeper and not so precisely tuned. The Octoban goes back to a drum set made of bamboo tubes, which was developed in the USA in the 1950s and which became known under the name Boobam .
