The wintery or glacier guest ( Boreus hyemalis , syn .: Boreus hiemalis ) is a 3 to 4.5 millimeter long insect from the family of the wintery (Boreidae).

It has gray-brown, shiny metallic, stubby wing rudiments. Wintery crawl or jump over the snow at temperatures around freezing point and thus resemble the way of life of the springtails belonging to the snow and glacier fleas .

The males have 4 short wing rudiments, curved downwards at the end; in the females only two scale-like wing remnants are left. Incidentally, the females can be recognized by a saber-like curved tube that is used to lay eggs. When fully developed, these animals are only found in the colder season between October and March. Mating also takes place at the same time. The larvae live on moss areas and retreat into holes in the ground in September to pupate.
