Boreus is an insect - genus from the family of Winter Exemplary (Boreidae) in the order of the beak fly .

features

Species of the genus Boreus are inconspicuously small, shiny, smooth insects without any noticeable hairiness. They completely lack point eyes ( Ocelli ). As beaked flies, they have a head that is clearly extended downwards, a rostrum. The rostrum has an elongated conical shape and is two to three times as long as the head. The front of the rostrum is covered with tiny hairs. The maxillary palps reach beyond the end of this "trunk". The antennae are pivoted in the front center, with their base closer to the edge of the eye than their distance from one another. In the females they reach lengths of about half an abdomen length , in the males, however, a full abdomen length.

The thorax is cylindrical and almost as wide as the head. The wings of the males are only rudimentary and sickle-shaped stubs that are not suitable for flying. They are slightly longer than half the abdomen. The females, on the other hand, have no wings whatsoever. The legs and especially the rear pair are longer than the entire body. The abdomen is oval and the segments covered with fine hairs are clearly separated from each other by indented lines. In the males it is slightly wider than the head and the tip of the last segment has two small hooks. In females, the ovipositor is about half an abdomen length.

species

There are five species of the genus native to Europe:
