Borland Database Engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Borland Database Engine ( BDE for short ) is a universal interface for accessing relational databases , which was developed by Borland for Windows systems. It provides access to desktop databases such as Paradox , dBASE / FoxPro and Microsoft Access ; Furthermore, the SQL links are integrated, which allow access to most relational database systems such as DB2 , Informix , InterBase , Microsoft SQL Server , Oracle and Sybase natively. Any database that has an ODBC driver can also be addressed via this.

In addition to the Paradox and Visual dBase development environments, the BDE was also used by Borland Delphi and C ++ Builder as an abstraction layer for uniform access to various databases from corresponding applications.

Supported database formats

A distinction is made between two types of access or drivers: Native and ODBC .

Native driver

Native driver in version 5.2.0.2:

ODBC

All databases for which ODBC drivers are available and installed on the corresponding system can be accessed via ODBC.

Current status

The last version of the BDE is version 5.2. Most of the drivers it contains are marked with version 5.2.0.2 and have a file date of May 10, 2001 (11:00 am). The BDE has not been further developed since this version. Existing projects can be linked to other database interfaces such as B. Zeos can be ported.
