InterBase is a relational database system from Embarcadero that follows the SQL standard. It works on the client-server principle .

Since the source code of version 6 was published in 2000 by the then owner Borland , there has also been the spin-off Firebird , which is still open source . With version 7 InterBase became proprietary again .

InterBase was born from a new concept by Jim Starkey, who designed database software for the Digital Equipment Corporation . In the absence of a final decision by the company, he founded his own in the mid-1980s, initially called Groton Database Systems , then named Interbase Software and bought by Ashton-Tate in 1991 . This company was bought by Borland that same year. At that time, InterBase was in version 3.

Borland supplemented InterBase, for example, with stored procedures and a version for Microsoft Windows .

Embarcadero bought the corporate division with InterBase from Borland and markets InterBase in four variants:

  • Server Edition
  • Desktop Edition
  • To-Go Edition also for iOS and Android
  • Developer Edition
  • XE Server for Solaris

The Developer Edition is included with all current Embarcadero Delphi editions. The traditionally included graphic management tool IBConsole now also offers performance analyzes.
