Bossaball is a team sport that is played by two teams of two to five players each. It was invented by Filip Eyckmans in Spain between 2003 and 2005 and combines volleyball, football, gymnastics and acrobatics. The game is played on a huge air cushion that is divided into two halves by a net in the middle. There is a trampoline on each half, which opens up many new techniques and ways of playing to the players.

history

Bossaball began in Spain, where Belgian-born Filip Eyckmans began developing the basics for the new sport in 2003. Filip Eyckmans, a former player in the Belgian national tennis team, was inspired by the Afro-Brazilian fighting dance capoeira on one of his many trips to Brazil . He was also impressed by the beach culture of Brazil, in which football, volleyball, dances and music combined, and he made all these impressions important elements of Bossaball. When choosing the name, Filip Eyckmans was influenced by the Brazilian dance Bossa Nova , which translates as "new wave". In the meantime, bossaball clubs have been founded in many countries, which also hold international tournaments among themselves. A map of some of the existing Bossaball clubs can be found on the official Bossaball homepage. Most of the active players are currently in Spain, Brazil, Holland and now also in Germany. However, there is still no comprehensive association in Germany. Bossaball has been cooperating with NeVoBo (Nederlandse Volleybal Bond), the Dutch national volleyball team, since 2006, and this close collaboration has resulted in over 200 Bossaball events in the Netherlands within two years.

matchfield

The playing field at the Bossaball consists of an 18 by 14 meter air cushion, which is divided in the middle by a height-adjustable net. Depending on the strength of the teams, the network can be set higher or lower. The playing field essentially consists of four areas:

  • the safety zone that surrounds the playing field (light blue),
  • the playing field (blue),
  • the round trampoline with a diameter of 3.45 meters (green),
  • and the Bossawall that surrounds the trampoline (red).

Teams and gameplay

At the bossa ball, two teams with three to five players each face each other. In international competitions, the number of players is limited to a maximum of four players per team. One player per team occupies the position on the trampoline, the rest of the team spread over the rest of the field. A player of the serving team throws or kicks the ball into the air and tries to push it to the other half of the game with a shot with his foot or with a blow over the net. The opposing team must now try a combination of a maximum of five ball contacts (six for recreational games) to bring the ball back over the net to the other half of the field. These ball contacts can be made with any part of the body, for example with a volley touch or a soccer touch . The players are not allowed to touch the net and they must always have at least one part of their body on their own half of the field.

A rally ends when the ball hits one of the so-called scoring zones or a team fails to move the ball within the permitted ball contacts over the net to the other half of the pitch. The two scoring zones are the opposing playing field and the opposing trampoline. Points are awarded as follows:

  • Scoring with a volley touch:
    • 1 point if the ball hits the field of play,
    • 3 points if the ball hits the trampoline.
  • Score with a soccer touch:
    • 3 points if the ball hits the field of play,
    • 5 points if the ball hits the trampoline.
  • Points by mistake of the opponent:
    • 1 point if the opponent plays the ball out of bounds, in the net or in his own field or makes a mistake in the permitted ball contacts.

The winning team is the first to score 25 points with at least two points ahead.

Music and "Samba Referees"

The music is a particularly important aspect of the bossa ball. The word bossa is often associated with the term bossa nova , a Brazilian style of music with influences from samba, which is very often played at a bossa ball event. The so-called Samba Referee is responsible for the music . Equipped with a flute, a microphone, percussion and a DJ desk, this ensures the right atmosphere and thus heats up the audience, but also the players. However, the Samba Referee is not only responsible for the music, but also has the function of referee. He decides on the allocation of points and monitors the game. The name Bossaball is not chosen arbitrarily, but aims to combine sport, music and a good atmosphere and thus create a very unique sport.
