Boston Hardcore

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boston Hardcore is the name given to the then and now hardcore scene in and around Boston and its sound.

history

The first hardcore bands in Boston were The Freeze , The FU's , Gang Green , Jerry's Kids , Negative FX , Siege and SS Decontrol . Part of the scene was influenced by Washington's straight edge scene. Members of bands like DYS , Negative FX and SS Decontrol formed the "Boston Crew", a hardline - a militant straight-edge group that often attacked punks who consumed alcohol or other drugs . The controversy surrounding this group and their actions sparked a debate about violence in the hardcore scene. In the late 1980s Elgin James became active in the militant faction of the Boston straight-edge scene and one of the co-founders of the group Friends Stand United , which later developed into a street gang . In 1982 Modern Method Records released the compilation album This Is Boston, Not LA , a compilation of tracks by bands from the Boston hardcore scene with songs by The Proletariat , The Freeze, The FU's, Jerry's Kids and Gang Green. Curtis Casellas Taang! Records was another record label that released material from that period.

Musically, Boston Hardcore does not represent a uniform trend. The music of the protagonists of the genre was influenced by such diverse influences as Britpunk, Metalcore , Oi! , Rock music or straight edge. While New York Hardcore is usually associated with a metal- heavy sound, the term "Boston Hardcore" therefore only refers to the origin of the bands assigned to it.
