history

The Botanical Garden in Wroclaw was established as a research institute in 1811, at the same time as the University of Wroclaw was founded. It was laid out on the former site of the fortifications on an area of five hectares. In the first year 427 different types of plants were planted. In 1816 the garden already had over 2000 plants of various kinds.

In 1933 the garden was expanded by one hectare. During the Second World War , the Botanical Garden was badly affected. The greenhouses were almost completely destroyed and about 50% of the plant population as well. During the turmoil of the last months of the war, anti-aircraft artillery was stationed in the garden.

After the war, the garden was gradually restored and planted. This reconstruction of the park lasted until the end of the 1950s. New structures were also added, such as a large wooden bridge over the pond. The Botanical Garden has been a listed building since 1974 and since 1991 as a whole with the adjoining Wroclaw Cathedral . Today the site has a total area of 7.4 hectares and more than 7,500 different plant species. The reconstructed monument to Joseph von Eichendorff has been located in the western part since 2012 .
