The Breslauer dwarves (Pol. Krasnale ) are a tourist attraction in Breslau (Wrocław), the capital of the Polish Lower Silesia . The political opposition movement " Orange Alternative " criticized the communist regime in Poland in the 1980s with spontaneous actions (for example demonstrations in dwarf costume) and erected a cast-iron dwarf ("Papa dwarf") in the old town of Wroclaw. The dwarf motif certainly goes back to the model of the Dutch cabouter movement , which was active around 1969 to 1974 , which also playfully and subversively took up the myth of the cunning and helpful dwarfs .

In the summer of 2001, the first dwarfs appeared as a project by students from the art school in the city. Since the artist Tomasz Moczek was commissioned to make twelve dwarfs in 2004, the figures have been available in different versions throughout the city. At the beginning of 2009 there were already 95 specimens, in August 2014 the 300th dwarf was installed in Wroclaw, in August 2018 there were already over 600 dwarfs. The figures are cast from bronze and have a size of about 30 cm.

On the occasion of the 55-year partnership between Wroclaw and Dresden in 2014, the city president of Wroclaw presented the Saxon city with such a dwarf bearing the coats of arms of both cities. On February 5, 2015, it was inaugurated at its location at Hietzigbrunnen . On June 18, 2019, another Wroclaw dwarf was placed on the stairs to the Ratskeller at the New Town Hall in Dresden. The new lucky charm carries a suitcase and a sunflower.

The initiators of the Nordhausen staircase beetles were also inspired by the Wroclaw dwarfs .
